O balanço consolidado de inscrições ao Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio (Enem) de 2009 indica que 4.147.527 pessoas são esperadas para realizar a prova no próximo fim de semana, sábado e domingo, dias 3 e 4 de outubro. Esse número é o maior de todas as onze edições anteriores do exame, que ocorre desde 1998. No ano passado, foram cerca de 4 milhões de inscritos e quase 3 milhões de presentes no dia da prova.

Dentre os inscritos ao Enem 2009, mais da metade já concluiu o ensino médio em anos anteriores: 60,97% do total. Os formandos neste ano representam 32,29% dos inscritos para fazer a prova, e somam 1.339.242 estudantes. Os outros 6,74% dos inscritos abrangem estudantes que vão terminar o ensino médio nos próximos anos e também aqueles que farão o exame como forma de certificar seus estudos.

O número de potenciais participantes no Enem que está terminando o ensino médio neste ano representa algo próximo de 80% dos concluintes em todo o Brasil, numa comparação feita com os dados mais recentes do Censo Escolar da Educação Básica. De acordo com o Censo, 1.742.620 estudantes haviam concluído este nível de ensino no ano de 2007.

Inscritos por município - O Enem 2009 será aplicado em 1.829 municípios espalhados por todos os estados e Distrito Federal. Também está prevista a aplicação da prova em 339 unidades prisionais do país. Considerando as cidades que abrigam exclusivamente presídios, o Enem vai chegar até 1.843 municípios no Brasil.

A cidade de São Paulo é a que concentra maior número de inscritos para realizar a prova, 234.173 pessoas. A seguir vêm os municípios de Salvador (131.468 inscritos), Rio de Janeiro (110.979 inscritos) e Manaus (93.112 inscritos).
