Universidade Luso-Afro-Brasileira é pagamento de dívida histórica com a África, diz Lula
O presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva afirmou nesta segunda (26) que a criação da Universidade Federal de Integração Luso-Afro-Brasileira (Unilab) é uma espécie de pagamento de tributos aos povos africanos. A lei que cria a instituição foi sancionada na semana passada.
“É o Brasil assumindo a sua grandeza, assumindo a condição de um país que, a vida inteira, foi receptor e, agora, é um país doador. Nós queremos ajudar os outros a se desenvolverem”, disse, em seu programa semanal Café com o Presidente.
Lula citou o exemplo de Cuba que, apesar de pobre e com uma população de cerca de 11 milhões de habitantes, possui universidades que atendem estudantes de todo o mundo. “E um país do tamanho do Brasil não pode ter?”, perguntou o presidente.
O objetivo da Unilab é promover atividades de cooperação internacional com os países da África por meio de acordos, convênios e programas de cooperação internacional, além de contribuir para a formação acadêmica de estudantes dos países parceiros.
A nova universidade será localizada no município de Redenção, a 66 quilômetros de Fortaleza. De acordo com a Secretaria de Políticas de Promoção da Igualdade Racial, a previsão é que as obras do campus comecem em meados de 2011. As atividades acadêmicas terão início este ano em instalações provisórias, em prédios cedidos pela prefeitura local.
